12V LED Drivers

12 V LED lamps and luminaires can either be powered directly from a 12V DC source such as a battery or via a 12V LED driver (transformer) which turns mains electricity (240VAC in the UK) into 12 Volts DC.

There are two basic types of LED driver: constant current and constant voltage:

A constant voltage LED driver will produce an output of exactly 12.0V DC. The 12V LED lamps and other 12V powered LED units must be connected in parallel to such a driver.

A constant current LED driver will produce an output as a fixed current - for example, 350mA models are available for use with 1 Watt LED bulbs (not 12V LED spotlights). The bulbs must be connected in series to such a device.

For 12 V DC LED lamps and luminaires on this site the constant voltage type should be used.

The LED driver is usually provided with short circuit protection, thermal protection (to prevent overheating), and surge protection. However, all of the LED lamps should be connected before switching on the mains supply.
